Coin dealer gives five gold coins to Salvation Army in Maryland

The one man who gave five 1-ounce gold coins to a Maryland chapter of the Salvation Army called himself a "secret Santa Claus," according to 9news.com.

As owner of a coin shop in the city of Frederick, Matt Lerner knows perfectly well that each of the five South African Krugerrands is worth nearly $2,000 apiece with present-day gold prices. Though he secretly donated the gold coins, his name and identity emerged as a result of a note included with the donations. A high-level Salvation Army official expressed appreciation.

"I don't know of anywhere else this has happened in the country where we got five gold coins in the same day," Major Raymond Pruitt with the Salvation Army told the news source. "It's the first time in Frederick we received five in the same day."

In any case, the 25-year-old becomes the first known case of one person giving five gold coins to the Salvation Army in one day.

The record price for gold is $1,923.70 per troy ounce and on Tuesday the precious metal was hovering around $1,736 per troy ounce.
