Gold coins remain popular as donation during holidays
The holiday season has come and gone for most individuals, as the Christmas trees are beginning to come down and the famous red kettles of the Salvation Army have been placed back in storage. Although this marks the end of the collection period, this year brought significant donations from many anonymous donors, according to The Asbury Park Press.
Matt Lerner, a 25-year-old owner of the Frederick Coin Exchange in Maryland, noted that many anonymous donors place gold coins into the kettle as a way to contribute a significant amount to the cause.
"You’d always hear those stories all over the country of people dropping in gold coins (to Salvation Army kettles)," Lerner told the news source. This year he slipped five South African Krugerrands into plastic bags with a note explaining the value of each one. He placed these bags in the Salvation Army kettles for a donation.
This year alone, the Salvation Army has received two-dozen donations of these gold coins, according to the Press.
These donations are notable for precious metal buyers, as the price of gold was reported by Kitco News to be $1,595.60 an ounce.
