Notre Dame set to introduce new gold football helmets

With the Trojans of the University of Southern California set to descend upon South Bend, Indiana, on Saturday, the University of Notre Dame football team plans to unveil new gold helmets that more closely resemble the color of the campus' famed Golden Dome.

According to USA Today, Notre Dame athletics director Jack Swarbrick and head football coach Brian Kelly said the new gold helmets come after multiple recent attempts could not effectively replicate the color.

"We've been frustrated with the helmet," Kelly explained. "It just has never gotten to the right color. We want it to be the Golden Dome. I mean, that's the representation for me. Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, but that's the gold that we were looking for. Still has the flake, the gold flake in it."

Kelly is referring to the 23.9 karat gold flakes, which will continue to be featured on the helmet. However, the tradition of student managers for the football team painting the helmets prior to the game will not continue due to the complexity of the process, the news source said.

The golden dome, which rests atop Notre Dame's idyllic main building, was constructed in 1882 and most recently regilded in 2005, according to the university's website. The official site of the university's athletics department notes that actual gold flakes from the dome will still be included in the painting process.
