Rare coins donated to Salvation Army

Two rare coins were recently donated to the Salvation Army in Cleveland County, North Carolina.

Major. David Craddock of the Salvation Army in Cleveland County told the Gaston Gazette that the charitable organization received two Krugerrands in Shelby earlier in the month. This could provide beneficial as gold prices have risen for the last eleven years, gaining 10 percent in 2011, Reuters reports.

Although the holiday season is over, donations are still being made, according to Gaston Gazette.

Craddock told the media outlet that the Salvation Army collects donations year round, not just at Christmas like a lot of people think.

He said that the coin was received by a woman who was trying to reach a fundraising goal, according to the media outlet.

"We had a lady named Amy Hartley who was trying to raise $1,000 at Harris Teeter that day, and the Krugerrand was in the kettle that night," Craddock told the media outlet. She ended up gathering more than $1,200 worth of cash and checks, and generated more than $1,700 from the coin.

He stated that the two rare coins were part of many generous donations that helped the Salvation Army to give back to the community, according to the media outlet.
