Sale of Spanish gold doubloons featured on storage auction TV show

Two reality television stars recently saw antique Spanish gold worth $500,000 sold for a little more than $1,000, according to a press release.

Dating as far back as the 16th century, the doubloons – as the ancient Spanish gold is known – were featured on Storage Treasures and sold near San Francisco to a man from San Jose named "John" who bought the unit's remnants. The sellers were Dan and Laura Dotson.

"This is the kind of story that every auction hunter dreams about," said Lance Watkins, StorageTreasures president and founder. "There are treasures tucked away in units across the country and every day there is a chance that someone will strike it big."

StorageTreasures.com, a free self-storage unit auction locator, finds sales in the U.S. and in Canada while offering a comprehensive storage auction. The outfit is anticipating an uptick in attention paid to its programming.

Established on September 6, the record high price of gold is $1,923.70 per troy ounce. Thus far this year, gold prices have climbed about 24 percent as the precious metal barrels toward an 11th consecutive year of annual gains with less than 45 days remaining in 2011.
